hey its me, how's it going?things are going well here, last week was good, i got the christmas packages you sent and one from g&g garr, so i got 5 packages in one day, it was pretty nuts.
on sunday a japanese member of the military branch invited us to dinner at her house with some of her friends her husband thats an american, and a korean friend of theirs that is not a member. it was quite the experience, they cooked japanese food for us. so we walked into the house and we look over at the coffee table and see this pot with veggies and meat in it that looked really simialiar to korean food we sit down to eat and the hand us our each individual bowl and an egg which i thought was hardboiled. next the tell us to crack the egg into the bowl, it was raw... elder hirsche and i look at each other kinda like "what is going on?", then the old japanese ladies started putting food into our bowl with raw egg in it and told us to start eating. it was a little shocking at first, but it turned out to be one of the best tasting things i've ever had! it was so good.the other good experience of the week were: sunday night we where at a house where the member was married to a nonmember thai lady named pat that i will baptize on saturday, this one is solid its not falling through. well here husband kevin hyde grew up in logan and went to logan high school and i told him mom went there and he said "oh really?" he busted out his year books and sure enough i found sherry bunnell as a sophomore and junior in high school, kevin was a year ahead of mom and one behind doreese. small world huh? mom, kevin was wondering who you hung out with, he says you look really familiar.
elder hirshe and i made a christmas card that i'm working on getting sent out. i'm staying warm the thermal bottoms you sent were way to big but i don't really need them as long as i have my coat on.i'm going to send those shoes back to, they are big. i'm goingto apologize right now for christmas, i'm not sending much home, there are no good souvenoirs to buy in my area, and i don't have time to go searching, sorry. but i'm going to try to send home pictures soon.

relax mom i'm doing fine. things here are good, i like a lot of the food now, i just needed some time to adjust. the reason i loose weight is cause i eat better and walk everywhere. and i like everything else here too, so relax.last week was good, thanksgiving was great, i ate way to much food. the grandys was fun they had alot of people over, they had a talent show, we did a skit for the talent show and ashley grandy and her sister whitney did a magic show, those were the highlights. after eating while we were cleaning up, sister grandy asked me to cut the rest of the turkey off the bird.... that was interesting haha.never done that before. but i think for the most part i got it all.the past few days were pretty warm but today is kinda cool, i think its going to get really cold again soon. i got the thanksgiving package yesterday, thank you, it will be great, i can't wait to use the food. i love stuffing.
i've been thinking alot lately what i am gonna do for a profession and i think i'm going to be a surgeon. or start my own skate shop like lip trix.last night we bought a christmas tree and we also decorated some trees at the church for the korean ward. it was fun, ashley came and brought us taco bell, she was going to help us with english class but we didn't have many students so the people not teaching went and decorated the trees. it was a good time.
well gotta run

i have officially accepted the fact that i look like a bear... everyone at home would call me papa bear, everyone in the mtc would, all the missionaries here do(and i never told them that my nick name used to be that, they just decided it fits) and to top it of, last night after our english class one of the members from the korean ward out of no where says(in korean first then in broken english)" Elder Garr you look like bear" non of the other missionaries told her to say it, she just decided it on her own and all the other members in the room agreed. but... they did say i look like a teddy bear so maybe thats a good thing. haha i about died laughing when this took place it was rediculous.
Things are going well here, except for the kid that is supposed to get baptized this weekend disappeared, that makes 2 disappears for me in 2 months but i'm sure he'll show up. This last week was great we found alot of new people to teach. and they are all really cool so it should be a good next few weeks.times rediculous right now, it seems like i emailed home yesterday, time is going really fast.A week from saturday we find out if anyone is getting transferred, i hope not i really like the people in my house now, and elder hirsche is a champ. so hopefully i won't get transferred. plus we have 2 thanksgiving dinners lined up.
Ask dad if its alright if he takes some money from my account and i buy a new translator with it, i want a smaller one that can fit in my coat pocket. then i'll probably sell my other translator after i transfer the pictures to my new one. And if you want to put some cookie mixes in that package you are send and some deodorant, they don't sell it here, and i'm out, so if you could send some of that it would be great.well i gotta go, today i'm getting a haircut and tonight i'm going to eat at the grandys, and teach a couple people it should be good.

Hello everyone.this last week was fun because we got to go trick or treating with some investigators at the military base. but this week was tough because we had alot of appointments cancel. on monday we had 5 appts. cancel, so we were out on the street all night. but things are going alot better in general now that i'm with elder hirsche. he's a champ, and we work really hard together which is good, last transfer bugged me because my companion didn't really do much. but now things are rolling. tonight we are meeting an investigator from tanzania in africa, we are eating at the grandys and then teaching him there, he's pretty sweet. his middle name is bukuku. we met him last thursday night at an event with the military ward. things are getting better with the language, my companion really pushes me to talk to people. so that helps alot. oh and i official have my green card now as of yesterday i'm no longer an illegal immigrant haha. not much is going on, time goes really fast because the days are all so similiar. i learned how to make some pretty good fried rice, well actually i just taught myself it pretty easy i've seen people do it a few times and i tried it out, it was pretty good but could use some soy sauce. last night was our english class and i taught 4 kids that were between 10-13 years old in korean age so like 9-12 in american, and they taught me some games to play that you don't need anything for, it was fun, the bishop wants us to baptize 2 of them cause the other 2 are his sons and he wants them all to grow up in the church so i'll see what i can do. did i ever tell you my bishop looks like jackie chan? its pretty sweet and he's a way sweet guy, i'll get a picture with him and send it sometime, well gotta run

p.s. thanks for the shoes they are great. the garments might be a little big though, i'm down to 235lbs, thats down 45lbs from when i went to the mtc.

thank you for mailing that stuff. its starting to get cold here, the wind blows alot now, and it is a wind stream straight from russia and its freezing. and don't worry about christmas, i'm already plotting it out, i'll probably just send one package home and then you guys can distribute. not to much went on this last week. Good news on sunday we set a baptismal date with a 23 year old and the date is the 16th of november. we are trying to find alot of good investigators right now, we have a few but not as many as we'd like, we have 2 people from vietnam and 2 from mongolia that we are teaching in korean even though elder hirsche is the best one in the language.kinda crazy. Every week we teach a free english class because the people here love english and its a good way to find people to teach. and last night for our class we had a halloween party and we had a lot of people from our ward come to the english class to, because koreans don't celebrate it, so we had them come. it was really fun, we set up a haunted house in the church that consisted of 3 rooms, but it was really sweet i wore a mask and scared people all night it was really fun. we also had bobbing for apples and some other stuff. it was really successful, the korean bishop kim yoenghwan loved it. as he was leaving he shook my had and said in english "i love you" haha it was pretty funny. i think the bishop liked it more than anyone else. and today we went to the temple, thats about all that happened this week. last sunday sister grandy told me i need to find a tailor for my clothes, and today hirsche told me i look swamped in my clothes. so maybe i will need to buy new suits soon, cause they are really cheap here. but i want to wait as long as i can without buying new ones. well i'll try and get a tape of soon.

Court Eats Dog!
October 8, 2008
last saturday, it happened, i had to eat dog... we went this place to eat with a recent convert and her parents, and i ordered some chicken, turns out that it was a whole chicken, feet and all in a pot with soup in it, and the chicken was stuffed with rice, it was all going well i like the stuff i ordered, then the recent convert handed me this plate with meat on it, naturally i said what is it? and she said kaygogi, which translates as dog meat. then she said i must eat it all, so i ate a little plate of dog last week. To tell you the truth it wasn't too terrible, but it was extraordinarily chewy. I got a picture of it, i will send home soon. Things here are good, transfers are next week, so i'll explain about my house and stuff next week when i know what is happening with transfers. As for general conference thats not until this weekend for us, and we will watch it at the church in my area, the missionaries from my zone will be there, and it will be fun. As for the jacket, they don't have the jackets i like here. So i have a request, can you send my gray and blue hollister zip up hoody? also in need more shows, they don't have good shoes here from what i understand, so can you go to christensens and get another pair of echo's size about 11, and i need shoes to wear around my apartment, since i can't wear my out side shoes, so while you are at christensens can you get a pair of globe castro shoes size 11, they are perfect for what i need.As of right now i'm not really homesick, the food is getting easier, i actually really enjoy some of it. I eat way to much here, i don't understand how i'm loosing weight. I don't have culture shock anymore to speak of, only when i have to eat weird food. I did get you package thank you very much, i'm am waiting to eat the stuffing until a special occasion, things are going well with the language, its tough, all around its the hardest in the world. I don't speak much but i'm starting to understand a little more. I'm glad angie and josh are moving back to logan, i've been thinking about them alot lately. Well i better go, tell stacey and grandpa and grandma thanks for there emails. i'll write more in depth next week about transfers and stuff.

I have eaten more food in the past 2 days then i ever want to eat again... yesterday we had a lunch appt with a potential investigator that went really well, the guy loved our church and said he will come to church on saturday. I got this stuff called jjaajamyon its a noodle dish with black sauce. i had had it before and it was good, so i thought i'd try it again. So i tell the guy that we were with that i would have jjaajamyon, and he ordered a "special" type for me, i was expecting it to be the same as before...... then the lady brought out my food, it was noodles and that black sauce, plus shrimp, squid, and some other unidentifiable sea creatures... it was interesting. and i had to eat it, because koreans get really offended if you don't eat there food, especially if they are buying for you. so i ate there, then for dinner we went to costco, and i got a bulgogi bake, its like the chicken bake in the costcos back home. and i also got a hot dog. so i ate that and was really full, then we went and taught our english class at 7o'clock and the people in the advanced class decided after class that we should all go back to costco and eat because they were hungry. so we went bake to costco. they all threw in money and bought alot of food for everyone. but since we teach the english class for free and don't make money as missionaries they decided they would buy 2 pizzas, 3 bulgogi bakes and drinks and the whole shibang. Koreans do something americans don't do, they feed you, saying you are full doesn't work here, so i ended up eating 2 pieces of pizza another bulgogi bake, part of a salad, and 20 oz. of grape soda. 3 and a half hours after i ate my self sick the first time. i wanted to die. then today, one of the people elder fisher baptized a while back decided to take us to a meat buffet, and i was still full from yesterday. the problem was if i didn't eat a rediculous amount ate this nice meat buffet, then it would be really rude. so i'm sitting there eating and the lady that took us there decided i was eating too slow, so she started feeding me... it wasn't a fun as it sounds but it was still good. not too much happened this past week, although i did get eaten alive in my sleep by mosquitoes, i woke up with atleast 10 bites yesterday, the good news is the mosquitoes will all die soon because it is starting to get cold. I bought some things that i needed, like soap shampoo, a blanket ect. so dad i'm sorry i have used your card so much this week, but ya gotta do what ya gotta do.from tonight until saturday night we have a big openhouse at the church that our ward here is doing, all the missionaries in the zone are coming to youngdongpo (my area) to help with it. they are hoping a few thousand people will come to it. i'll explain it more next week, cause even now i'm not so sure what to do.

Three months ago today i reported to the mtc, weird... time is a very weird thing, especially on a mission, sometimes time goes soooo slow, but other times it goes rediculously fast.Things here are going well, in the past 10 days or so we picked up 7 investigators, which is good news. Me and my companion are having a great time, the other 2 missionaries in our house are way sweet too, they say they keep forgetting that i'm a greeny, so i guess thats a good sign. Today we went to the temple, its in the seoul mission so we had to leave our mission. its a really small temple, its weird because its right in the middle of one of the biggest cities in the world yet, but its the most quiet place i've been to in a few weeks. after that we found a mexican restraunt... it was good, no cafe rio, but still good. the weather here is unusually hot, all the other missionaries said it usually starts to cool down about now, but its not yet... so its still warm and really really humid. our apartment is nice, and we sleep on mats on the floor. sorry to be short but i gotta run

Hey Guys-
i'm on the other side of the planet, its 1:00 thursday afternoon here, and its 9:00 wednesday night where you are, weird eh?This place is intense, people everwhere. i'm starting to get used to the smell but there are some places that stink rediculously bad, like a street market we went to the other day, there were these disgusting dried sea creatures there, and some absolutely disgusting looking foods, and lots of chicken feet. The good thing about this place is we probably won't eat at members houses very often so i don't need to worry about eating some of this stuff. Bad news is if i'm served something weird they will get really offended if i don't eat it. Right now i'm in the korean national library and emailing, its really nice.koreans speak soo fast, i just sit a listen in awe that they can understand each other. This last week was the craziest week of my life, i got really homesick the first few days, but i'm doing alot better now. I honestly don't think that there is a more completely backwards place in the world, its totally opposite than utah. So i was just like "what is going on" all last week. But like i said things are getting alot better, we have gotten 3 new investigators this week so far and hopefully a 4th tonight. Lessons are funny because i just sit and listen and elder fisher does all the talking. Elder fisher is a good guy, he's funny and works really hard. My other roomates elder seely and hirshe are pretty funny so it makes things easier to adjust. This week i'm going to try really hard to adjust to the food, i'm going to force myself to eat it, because once i learn to like the food life will be alot easier. Its just a little different than dutchoven or steak and potatoes. The people here are really friendly and for the most part pleasant. The church building we meet in is fantastic its brand new, really nice, and they even have beday toilets in the bathrooms haha. Thats a plus! This weekend is kinda screwy because its the koreans thankgiving on sunday so on saturday sunday and monday we can't really proselyte because it would be viewed as rude. Yesterday we had a combined district meeting and i got the package you sent finally, and it had been opened and the jerky was taken:( oh well life goes on, i'll just go eat some bu shin taang, haha which is dog soup... i hope i never eat it. I also got a really nice package from marcie and it had some good foods in it that i'm excited to eat. but i'm going to save it for a special occasion. to tell you the truth i haven't eaten much korean food since coming here because costco is in my area and thats got american food, so does one of the local grocery stores. This place is really smoggy but they have a good recycling program. and everyone smokes... all the time.So i'm doing well, give me a little to get used to the food then i'm sure i'll love it here. oh ya tell dad i need to use his card to buy american food sometimes.well i gotta go.

Hey Guys-
i'm on the other side of the planet, its 1:00 thursday afternoon here, and its 9:00 wednesday night where you are, weird eh?This place is intense, people everwhere. i'm starting to get used to the smell but there are some places that stink rediculously bad, like a street market we went to the other day, there were these disgusting dried sea creatures there, and some absolutely disgusting looking foods, and lots of chicken feet. Elder fisher is a good guy, he's funny and works really hard. as a matter of fact i have hugged a korean today.this place is gigantic, riduculous big, so big i'm even going to make up a new word for it, that word is (hugeganourmous) haha. every where smells lovely, like kimchee, and its also humid, so i sweat alot. but seriously, its huge. and i like it for the most part, i need to get used to the food fast or i'm in for a long 2 years. i rode my first subway today, to my first area with my new companion, our area is the most coveted area, we have costco in our area, and its also one of the nicer areas from what i understand. I'm sorry to hear your eggo is still prego but thats just part of the fun right? the flight was rediculous. it was really long, the plane was really nice though, they have these things in the back of every seat and you can listen to music, play games like tetris, or choose from alot of different movies, i wish i could've watched some of the kids movies that would've been nice, they had kung fu panda, and it was all free. the food here is uhhh how should i say this, iffy at best, i need to learn to like it fast! tell makenna i wish i could come to her birthday party but i'm kinda far away. we are 16 hours ahead of utah time, you are probably getting ready for bed and its 3 in the afternoon here. well i gotta run, hope all is well, good luck with the pregnancy thing, i miss ya alot.

Hi Everyone-
Today is p-day and here we have an hour to email! thursday. and i'm exhausted! This place is insane, yes it does smell really garlic like here, its better in some areas and worse in others. i got my new companion today, his name is elder fisher, he actually was the one that started the holy grail tradition 14 transfers ago crazy eh? he's a funny guy and i think i'm going to really enjoy him, he says he likes to work hard and play hard so that helps, and he said he'll help me get used to the food. which is good because i am going to need all the help i can get. kimchee is very bizaare. The city is HUGE, we just dropped my stuff off at the apartment, we are on the 23rd floor and we look out towards some huge buildings. our apartment is really nice, its better than some apartments i've seen in the states. we also have 2 other missionaries living with us but i haven't met them yet. President Burton is a champ i love the guy already, he's like President anderson, pike, and stuer all blended into one. He's actually related to us, he comes from a the line of garrs that came acrossed the plains with the pioneers CRAZY HUH? i've never met any garrs besides our direct relatives.Sister Burton is awesome, she's really sweet and both her and her husband are very loving, i'm glad that they are the president and his wife because i really like them. The flight here went really fast, it took 12 hours, we had really good wind, it was the nicest airplane i've ever been on, and it was huge, i actually slept on it to, most the time actually. I've already talked to a couple people on the street, its hard but fun. it'll be nice when i learn some more korean haha. the korean people are very nice, we went to a place called gimbab sarang which means i love seaweed and rice, and i didn't really like what i got to eat, and they brought out more food for me out of no where. its really humid here, really humid. but i'm getting used to it. this sunday i get to introduce myself in church, our church building is the biggest church building in asia its brand new and five stories tall. so that will be fun. well i have to go register for my green card.

This is Elder Garr giving a shout out to all those who read this, how's everyone doing? I'm doing chosumnida(good). Less then 2 weeks i'll be in dayhan minguk( the mighty korea) and at that time i'm going to stop speaking english(unless i absolutely have to). As of yesterday i've been here 2 months, thats crazy, i'm 1/12 of the way done with my mission. Time goes really fast here. Korean is going well, i really like speaking it. We recently started learning how to speak in middle form, which is what i will speak for the most part on the streets, but when i teach lessons i will be speaking high form. so its kinda crazy. I'm getting better at praying in korean, i say most my prayers in it now and i've prayed for over ten minutes in strictly korean before.Last saturday we taught the plan of salvation in korean and i didn't even take any notes! I just prayed the Lord would help me out and He did, it was way sweet. I really can't wait to get to korea, this language is way fun to speak, and to write, except actual koreans speak 10 times faster than anyone i've heard. so that will be interesting haha. Thanks for all your letters and prayers.
Love- Elder Garr

I'm really busy lately, trying to keep my district in line and its really hard sometimes but i really enjoy it, its turning me into a better person for sure.gotta run

annyeong hashimnika yurboon?
good morning, how is every one? i'm good, my nose is definately broken, i go to the doctor tomorrow but you can tell by looking up my nose that my septum is definitely screwed up, elder peterson can even tell. thank you sooo much for the tape and the cookies it was awesome, on the tape Isaac asked me who it was that hit me in the face, it was elder Jeffery Millard from meridian idaho, weird eh? i know that getting hit with a foam football is a weak story but i have a weird nose and i got nailed right on. Other news, me and my companion taught the first lesson in completely Korean and saturday and nailed it. On sunday i said the sacrement prayer in korean, which is hard because in korean we only use the korean characters no roman characters for reading. On sunday i also got asked to be our district leader, which is crazy, i don't know why they'd ask me to do it but they did. There are 14 people in my district, 12 chang no nim(elders) and 2 cha mae nim(sisters). so i've got alot of stuff going on right now. We also get 2 new elders in our room this week when the new missionaries come in. i hope they are cool. well i'm gonna log off i'll get back on during laundry.

Hello Garr family,This is your favorite missionary! Things here are really good, I like my companion and most of my district. The food here is not quite swedish meatball or dutch oven quality but its bearable. The language is INSANE!!! they say its the 2nd hardest language they teach here, second only to finnish and thats only because finnish is tonal. But i'm picking up on it surprisingly well. I really like the MTC the spirit here is awesome. Tuesdays are my preparation day and the only day i can email or write home... so no i haven't forgoten you guys. The MTC has some quirky rules like i can't call people dude or say you guys, thats an adjustment. Korean is the most intense thing i've ever tried to learn but its good. Thank you sooo much for all of you support and letters, keep them coming, they make me stay positive and happy, thanks mom for sending me the gum, but the sad thing is missionaries aren't supposed to chew gum haha. I miss you guys very much and love getting letters from you because they make me feel closer to home.I've seen alot of my friends from high school here and thats good,i love being here, but i miss being home to... so please don't think i'll get annoyed with your letters cause i don't and never will, well i got to go i'll try and write some letters later.
i love all of you so much
